From
Tucker Run to the quarry, Dunbar Creek bounces
back and forth between the base of two ridges.
Much of this area was once flooded by a series of
four concrete dams. The dams were all
breached back when the EPA decided that
unmonitored dams were a hazard that was a public
menace. Just below Tucker Run, the stream
bounces up against the paved
road right of way. Here it causes
some serious erosion, that needs to be repaired.
The actions of the stream create some interesting
habitat with long riffled runs to the north east
till the stream comes near the road. Then
the water turns, forming a series of pools along
the eroded bank. Finally, the stream veers
back away from the road through a short rapid.
At the end of the rapid, the stream forms an
undercut hole then returns to repeat the process
as it continues down the valley. The
picture at the left is of one of Dunbar's
frequent fishermen, Stan Block. Stan lives in Crucible Pa.
and is a Biology teacher at Chartiers-Houston High School.
Like an increasing number of
conscientious fishermen, Stan practices Barbless
Catch and Release. This practice provides greater
opportunities for catching more and larger fish.
